Review - The Sims 4

Created on Monday, 22 September 2014

The Sims 4 isn't a brand new game in the sense of it reinventing the series, it is still very much a Sims game with minor tweaks here and there. They have removed some things and added some other things, they have improved things which very much needed that improvement and to be quite honest about it, they have taken most things that got criticized in the previous game and not only changed it but changed it for the better. The Sims 4 is in my eyes the perfect Sims game, whatever that may or may not mean to you.

I remember catching on to the hype around the time the first Sims game was announced. Being as I was a huge "Sim-anything" fan and still are to this day, I was all over the idea of building something and then controlling a Sim in that building. For years I played SimCity, SimEarth, SimAnt, SimLife... I remember SimTower and I also remember the let-down when I discovered that SimCopter wasn’t more than just that, SimCopter... Streets of SimCity is an entirely different story.

The point is I have followed Maxis games for years and have always been a fan, although lately I haven’t been as big of a fan since the SimCity debacle that we all know and remember way to well. But I will never turn down a game if I am either excited, curious or not totally burned out on it so The Sims 4 would be a nice way to disconnect from the world for a little bit and just live out fantasy lives through the sims.

Even though I haven't owned a Sims game since the first one, I have still played the Sims 2 and 3, mostly because my wife is a huge fan, as many women are of this series, and I got excited through her, but when I started my own little Sims community it always lead to death, anger and a lot of pissing my pants in public (in the game, not in rl) and that is how me and The Sims kept in touch over the years, so when I found out there would be a review code floating around of The Sims 4 I threw myself right back in the mix trying to get back into the groove and see what has happened since the last release.

The first thing that excited me when I started the game was the building or creation mode and what they had done with that formula. Building houses was always my favourite thing with the games but it also lead to a lot of frustration with rooms not getting large enough to fit all the necessities or it would collide into each other in the wrong way. But they have put into the old creation tool where you build the walls yourself with and easy pull and drag or push motion to easily shrink or enlarge the rooms, walls, floors to make the experience easier but also a share joy to create your perfect house. If you are not interested in doing your house from the ground up there are set piece that you can just click, drag and drop into your house that have specific rooms such as living-room, bathroom etc. that are filled with everything your sims is going to need to survive and all you need to do is place it where you want it, choose the decoration of the house and you are done. Great new feature and a great addition to what I find the most exciting with the sims games, the building.

But The Sims is more than just building your favourite house, it is all about connecting with people and keeping your sims or multiple sims alive and well which is harder than it might seem. Another new feature is the mood or emotions setting that your sims experience and also plays a huge part in how you interact with other people. Say you are talking with someone and you do something that the other sims doesn’t like or do not appreciate your sim could get embarrassed for example, this mode will stay with your sim for a short period of time and it is up to you to make him comfortable again. These different emotions your sims will go through is set by what you choose when you create your sim in the beginning of the game. Other than choose your sims personalities you also need to choose your sims goals which you can try and achieve. But as with the sims series you can do whatever you want whenever you want to.

The Sims 4 is a gift to new and old fans of the series, it has improved on most things that you might have had a problem with earlier, it has removed some features to make room for what is in my mind better features. The emotions features that are in the game adds to the reality and human-likeness in the sims that has always been more cartoon than real, yet there is still the quirky and weird humour implemented so that the game doesn’t take itself too serious. The Sims 4 is a must buy for any fans but it is also a gateway to people who are curious as to what the series is all about and why it is so popular. Easy to pick up and play but hard to master is the easiest way to describe the series for those of you that might not be familiar with it. The Sims 4 lets you play out your fantasies and I think that is the true secret to why the game is so successful, so why not try it out for yourself, you might be surprised as to who you really are.
