Review - Assassins Creed Rogue

ACRO hero

This is the end, beautiful friend, the end. Well, to be fair, this is a Assassin's Creed game so technically it is not the end, my friend but this might just be the last time the last-gen consoles get their very own Assassin's Creed game. And with a release of another Assassin's Creed game on the current-gen consoles it is not that hard for some to make their decision as to which they want to pick up thinking they are both basically the same. But they are not, this is Rogue and not Unity, this is more Black Flag 2 than anything else if you need something to compare it to, but wait, I enjoyed it.

I could easily say a few words right now that would make your decision as to if you should pick this game up or not right now and not have you read the entire review, but since I feel the need to explain why I pick the decision and feel the way I do for Rogue I need you to read everything, I am sorry if that ruins your day but Rogue is a double edged sword that might tickle your fancy if you are looking for the right things in a Assassin's Creed game.

First thing first, how did you feel about Black Flag compare to the other AC games in the series? Did you feel that AC Black Flag saved or ruined the AC experience for you? Because if you loved Black Flag then you are definitely going to enjoy Rogue as well. If you hated Black Flag and wanted more of say AC 1 or 2 then this is not your lucky day and Unity might be more up your alley. Because Rogue even though AC Rogue isn’t a Black Flag DLC, it certainly feels like it at times.

Let us address the length of the game as that seems to be the main issue people are having with this release, and yes, Assassin's Creed Rogue is a shorter than usual experience being a Assassin's Creed game, I think so too, but as with any Assassin's Creed games you know you will have numerous side objectives, collectables and places to explore and things to gather to keep you not only busy but distracted from the main objectives time and time again and Rogue is still that, filled with hours of entertainment for anyone who likes to explore.

You have your ship and it is a focus of the overall game, if you didn’t enjoy the naval combat in Black Flag then again, you might reconsider as naval battle is implemented almost at the beginning of the game. I for one, enjoyed the naval combat, I enjoyed having a huge ship to upgrade and take out and explore for treasure so I was all over it, although not as eager as I was with Black Flag but still, and yes the sea shantys are back, and yes you can turn them off after a while.

Now the story is OK but no way is it making the overall Assassin's Creed saga any more recognizable than these latest releases has been. The story is still confusing and I personally feel is getting way to cluttered with over lapsing time periods, and people jumping back and forth and too much parents, grandparents and siblings connecting for me to even know what half of the people I am talking to are or who their parents were, the story is still confusing is what I am saying.

ACRU Character Shay 610

But I have heard people talking about the main character Shay Patrick Cormac as a horrible protagonist, but I actually switched a bit on him later on in the game when I finally think I understood what the developers was trying to tell with this character, but how you feel about a character is way too personal of a taste preference to matter in a review but I felt the need to mention that I had no problem playing as Cormac, I actually enjoyed it.

Other than what I have previously mentioned there is the ability to shoot oil out of the back of your ship and then light it on fire, making your ship a leaking fire trap for any ships trying to chase you down which I personally found as a new favourite to use whenever I got into naval combat. Also the ability to become boarded by the enemies ships was something I couldn’t remember happening in Black Flag, but was a welcoming addition to what felt like more of the same when it comes to the actual naval combat.

As far as Shay goes, he also has a few new toys up his sleeve and one of them turned out to be another favourite which was the Berserk shots, which are basically darts which Shay can shoot from his air rifle, and when the dart hit an enemy he will then go berserk for a minute or so trying to kill anyone or anything in front of him, which will then aggravate enemies around him and if you are lucky they will all wipe themselves out before you even step into the area, at the end of the period the berserk dart works the enemy will die when it runs out.

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a great addition to the series, after a few ups and down with previous releases, mainly Revelations and Brotherhood and for some Assassin's Creed 3, Rogue manages to somehow capture me and entertain me from start to finish, sure there are the classic glitches everywhere, which you know well yourself if you previously played a AC game, and yes there are still horrible missions that will make you rage quit around some corners, but the overall experience of Rogue is actually pretty good, I enjoyed it, and I wanted to see it to the end. If this is the last stand-alone AC title on the last-gen consoles then this is a great way to end it here.
