Review - Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD

Created on Friday, 17 January 2014

Fresh off the boat, as we just reviewed Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag a few months back we get another Assassin's Creed release in the form of Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD available for PS3, PC and Xbox 360. Previously available only on the PS Vita this is a strict port for those of you that haven’t already experienced this game. We get to play around with the Xbox 360 version of the game and this is what we think about it.

ACL hero

Assassin's Creed Liberation was the first AC title launched on the PS Vita, and with some magic Ubisoft managed to port this game to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in the form of this release we are currently reviewing called Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD. It is also the first AC game that introduces the players to a female protagonist in the form of Aveline de Grandpre, a mixed race female assassin. It is through playing the main story you get to see how Aveline's story grants her a spot among the other Assassins.

The main difference between Aveline and the other protagonist in the series is her ability to change appearances, you see Aveline have the ability to portrait three different assassins in the form of a slave, a true lady and the known assassin form. Every form gives Aveline a special ability and every form must be used throughout the game to complete different missions.

The game is a lot shorter than other console Assassin's Creed games but this is simply because a lot of the side missions have taken a back-seat and the main story is totally in focus throughout the entire game. There are still some collectibles spread across the map but all in all there is a lot less to do here besides the story than in the newer AC games.

The transformation from Vita to Xbox 360 is noticeable, as the game looks good while you travel from point a to point b but there is nothing mind blowing in any sense in this game when it comes to the graphics. Not that we were expecting that from a port but there is enough difference for them to get the HD stamp of approval. Although you will run into some cut scenes that look pretty bare compared to the rest.

Also the world has been altered from the Vita version, and made more populated like in previous console version of the game. But the game also comes with the same frustrating moments that you probably have run into on previous version where the controls work against you. This happened less in AC IV Black Flag luckily but this is still one of the main issues I personally ran into while playing Liberation HD.

It all comes down to how big of a Assassin's Creed fan you are and if you have already played the game on your Vita. Because if you have played this game before you are better off waiting for a new AC Vita game as compared to this release it isn’t all that, but if you haven’t experienced the Vita version and you love the AC franchise you should definitely check the game out, if not for all the changes made, then at least to get another piece of the huge puzzle piece that is the AC story, but also the fact that you get a whole new gender to play as.

We would love to see more female protagonist in future releases or at least give the player the option to choose. Assassin's Creed Liberation HD is a good game but need to be played as what it is, a ported version of the Vita game.
