Review - Hitman Episode 1: Paris

Created on Tuesday, 29 March 2016

As a long time Hitman fan it is always scary for me personally whenever a new Hitman game releases, not because I am afraid it won't live up to my expectations but simply the fear of not having enough time to play it all the time, stupid sleep and family. You can imagine my ears perked up when I heard they were releasing an episodic Hitman game, because this way I could sleep, spend time with my family and play Hitman all in one day. And here we are, the first episode of Hitman is upon us and we get to sharpened or fibre wire and clean out our silenced pistols, clear out any empathy we had for humanity and go all in as I review the Playstation 4 version of the first episode in the Hitman series, Paris

I remember how my hands trembled as I loaded up the beta not too long ago, excited and nervous at the same time as this was the first time in a long time I would join up with my all time favourite protagonist, Agent 47. As soon as the introduction started pointing me where to go, what to pick up and literally show me how to take out everyone and everything until I finished the first mission I was starting to get nervous. I was getting nervous as I thought they had dumbed down what makes the Hitman games so amazing, mainly the freedom to do whatever you want, however you want, but luckily as soon as I entered Paris all my fears was laid to rest and the share size of the map, and the amount of different ways to complete my mission gave me a warm and fussy feeling inside, this was truly a Hitman game I would spend way too much time with.

I am not going to lie, I got Agent 47 tattooed on my arm, I am beyond a fanboy for the series, so you do not really need to read my entire review to figure out what my feelings on the series is, I love them. Everything from Contracts to Blood Money. I spent way too much time with Absolution, and spent way too much time with Hitman Go for my own good. I love this series, always have and probably always will. But the latest release in the series literally blew my mind as this might be the best Hitman experience I have ever had, and that my friends is saying a lot.

Paris is one huge open mission, and if you are expecting different scenarios or missions you will not find it here. The layout is simple, your task is to kill two people, that is all. But before you brush this off as a one-time, easy and short Hitman experience you are approaching this all wrong. This is not easy, there are literally so many challenges and ways to complete your mission that there is no chance for you to do everything here in one sitting. The first episode includes the Prologue and Paris, during the coming months different areas will release and a full version of the game will release on disc at the start of next year. You can get a sneak peak if you buy the Intro Pack, but if you want all the upcoming episodes you can buy the Full Experience which is basically a form of Season Pass. Without the said missions there are going to be weekly live events and small additions during this time.

So during the coming months, until the end of the year you will get new locations, and first up is Italy which is set to release in April, Morocco in May, and from there the monthly content updates including Thailand, US and Japan.

This means that you might not get more Hitman than usual but the experience is going to be prolonged and you get more time with each mission that you normally would if you got it all at once. Here are some words from the official press release: “The exciting thing about going episodic is that this format allows us to create a living game that will expand and evolve over time. This initial game release will help us build the foundation for where we want to take HITMAN. The first game is part one of a storyline we see expanding over the release of subsequent games - so we want to make absolutely sure we get things right for what will be a great Hitman experience expanding over the coming years. This first step is going to shape what the games will ultimately become.

We will be able to respond much faster to feedback, analyse player behaviour and implement changes on a regular basis that simply wasn’t possible before. We’ll be able to craft a long story arc that spans multiple games while at the same time crafting smaller arcs and stories that will find their conclusions within each game. We will get the chance to craft missions and revisit locations in ways that we’ve never been able to do before.“

Apart from the missions previously mentioned you have the Contracts missions where you can take on additional challenges made by the community or you can create one yourself. This is also where some of the weekly live events take place these are called Escalation Contracts. Escalation Contracts are new to the series and are more about pure fun than serious strategy, although you are going to need that as well to complete them and they all come with leaderboards to add to the tension and replay value of the experience.

This is shaping up to become the most complete Hitman game to date. The freedom back, the maps are huge, the contracts and challenges add incredible replay value and the game has never looked as good. This is truly a Hitman game for the fans and a great way for newcomers to join in on the fun and understand why so many of us consider this one of the best stealth game series of all time. I am personally having way too much fun with this and can't wait to see what is next for Agent 47. We will also release a review for each upcoming location.
